This blog is turning ONE year old on Friday! I cannot believe it! WOOHOO!
No, I am not at home right now dressed in my ‘backngroovemom cheerleading outfit’ and dancing around.
I am in jeans, and clearly avoiding the ‘happy anniversary to me’ post that is on my to-do list. The whole ‘YAY for me’ concept is really not my style.
Rather I am blasting Pandora and reflecting. Reflecting on the past year, and normally when I reflect, I think of everything that I do NOT want to do in my business. Weird. I am fully aware.
Over the course of the last year, I have come to learn a lot. I am a fast learner (just ask my family). Of course, I made and will continue to make mistakes (I always own up to them), but needless to say, I know a
bit ( a lot) just enough about blogging. Enough to be asked with regularity, ‘Can you give me a few blogging tips?’
Luckily, I am a sharer.
For lack of not being ready to share my reflections or sing ‘happy anniversary to me,’ I thought I would share my TOP Blogging Do’s and Dont’s (in my opinion and what do I know?):
- Know your blog’s ‘flavor’ and mission, and do NOT contradict yourself when writing. Decide up front what your overall tone and stance is, and stick by it. Likewise, if you are writing a guest post, understand the brand of the blog you are writing for and adhere to it! You can find me writing for Modern Mom, StartUpNation, and here on my blog – all 3 blogs have very different tastes, so I change my flavor for each one.
- Do edit your blog! That’s right – edit your blog the way you want it edited because it is your NAME behind the blog. Make it the way YOU want. Reserve the right to EDIT!
- Do proofread extensively….not just spellcheck! This is a fear that I have for my own kids who are growing up with spellcheck in their back pocket. The spelling may be right, but the meaning all wrong! Need help with this? Ask someone to proof for you.
Just this week, I read a blog for a MARKETING/ADVERTISING person in which the word ‘complimentary’ was spelled right, but used WRONG.
Spell check does not realize you may need ‘Complementary.’
- Market to your audience! Do post your blog to all the outlets out there – Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Google +, but do NOT cross-post every one of your posts on each medium. What belongs on Twitter, does not necessarily belong on Linked In. Gain more attention, by effectively posting on each medium with a blurb that appeals to the audience you hold on that medium.
Do you want to try blogging? Have a Question? Post it here…or email me! But, trust me – no question is silly… and, it is Back’nGrooveMom’s ONE year anniversary – make me feel special 🙂 Rachel
