The holiday weekend rolls on….two more days of FAMILY time complete with 14 boys for a pickup game of football today, basketball practice tonight, and keeping our fingers crossed for The Muppets tomorrow. Both exhausted and nostalgic, I wonder, who are these BIG kids?
No more naps, no more diapers, hugs are PRIVATE, kisses are RARE, and they go to parties on Saturday Night and I stay in……Who are these BIG kids?
My mom always told me that being a parent became more exhausting and challenging as kids get older. Of course, I did not believe her. After all, what could be more difficult than a screaming crying baby at 2 a.m.?
Well, my mom was right. There are so many bridges to cross, so many hills to climb with tweens. There are social dynamics to navigate, health and hygiene to teach, mouth expanders to turn, messy rooms to close the door on, social media and texting rights and wrongs, and the betwixt and between of loving your kids’ growing independence and yearning for the little baby again.
