Today is Monday. Many people abhor Mondays. Mondays symbolize back to work, a return to reality after a weekend of fun, but for me, Mondays are a fresh start.
I love Mondays. Although our weekends are often a BLAST, in reality they are EXHAUSTING. Between the shlepping, cooking, socializing, laundering, and if the stars align, the date-nighting, I fall into bed on Sunday night.
Weekends are work for all the moms and dads out there, and a double shift to those parents that work out of the home on weekends.
Gone are the days of leisurely brunches over the NY Times, long walks or runs, and late evenings over cocktails and friends. In are the long hours of school projects, practices, skiing, swimming, chocolate chip pancakes before 8 a.m., recitals, games, grocery runs, sibling arguments, and playdates.
I may fall into bed on Sunday nights, but I rarely sleep well anymore. Around 1 a.m., I wake up full of thoughts on all I want to do in the coming week. I actually sit up and wait for Monday morning to arrive, and officially announce that the week has started.
Lunches organized, snacks packed, hats and gloves on, and backpacks zipped up, my boys drearily walk out the door at 7:35 a.m., and I rush to my desk. I TRY really hard not to let work get in the way of my other job – being a mom – on the weekends, but by Monday I am bursting.
HELLO Monday!! My prototype is back to life thanks to prototype gal. I already worked with one consulting client – early bird gets the worm.
I am planning my week in blogging and LOL’ing. Laughing at the suggestions that I hear over the weekend as I am out and about. Suggestions for what friends and family want to see, hear and read on the blog this week.
This weekend included Louis V condoms (friend), cool men’s grooming products by local startup (husband), more Pinterest (friend), my brisket recipe (mom), and NBA All-Star game (sons). As for me, I was thinking more along the lines of Valentine’s lingerie, definitely a little more Pinterest, teaching moments with my kids, and well – quite frankly, how I can work in the table of 6 women who sat near me over the weekend at dinner?
The ones that made me fear sending my kids out into the world. The ones that still promote hatred, racism, and pro-life sentiment (they were so loud, I could not help but overhear their conversation).
Last week, already well covered were the million, or shall I say 40,000 moms, who oppose Ellen being the spokesperson for J.C. Penney. We witnessed the untimely death of Whitney Houston, a sensational performer of our time, who originally accused of acting too white, was encouraged to marry someone more black, and led a painful short life full of suffering.
And, the last time I checked, every woman owns her very own body. It is a woman’s right to say no to forced sex or not risk her life for a life threatening pregnancy.
So, yes…I still love Mondays. They are fresh, new, and allow me to share a whole new breadth of topics for women who want to stay relevant. Mondays allow me to get back to work, but sometimes, provide me a moment to reflect on the weekend. Tired and weary from 2 energetic sons, yet poised to promote change, and this week – maybe I will discuss the Louis V condom…maybe (at least some VDay Lingerie).
As Women – Why hate one another when we can support each other?
