Just to bring all of you up to speed…In late 2010, I woke up one morning and decided to pursue a product idea that I had stuck deep inside my brain. I literally announced my plans over breakfast, and my family at that point was really not sure what to make of the whole idea. Even better, my house full of men and boys did not know how to react to the area of my inventing — BRAS.
Well, tomorrow on February 29, 2012, I am heading to Ohio to meet my almost final prototype. I am going to be absent and busy for the next few days … For what I feel is a very good reason, but I did not want to leave without saying goodbye!
How did I get from the simply having an idea in my head to Ohio is a pretty long story, and if you follow along here then you know many of the details.
The short version is this: After making a choice to pursue this dream, I learned very quickly that it must be treated like a business. Why? Too much money and time were going to go in, to act like it was a DIY art project. I did try to make a few models/renditions of my idea myself before I realized what a DUMB idea that was, and I engaged with Prototype Guy. Prototype Guy turned out to be an amazing way to jump into inventing, as he is a local artist who helped me mold and craft my ideas into a 3D version.
Again, at this point, I tried to find my own way with CAD designs and blueprinting and prototype revisions, and also realized that I was a DUMMIE for trying to do so. This is when I sought the opinion of Jim Debetta, and with his help, I found a design team and Prototype Gal to really make the whole thing be factory ready. This has been a fabulous example of an internet love affair between Prototype Gal and me…talking and working over Skype and Goto Meeting. Following a small debacle involving a broken prototype and some very necessary revisions and space (all relationships need it), I am going to Ohio to meet Prototype Gal.
Not only is this meeting finally taking place after SEVEN months of working together (pretty intimately – considering we chat bras), but the prototype is near ready. I have seen pictures, and more importantly – I can feel it in my bones.
I am overwhelmed with emotions. I am getting my haircut (don’t you always do that before meeting an internet match?), deliberating over what I should wear, and going to Ohio!! Although, the road ahead is still long with packaging, UPC codes, patent documents, quotes, pricing, and sell sheets, I have waited a really long time for this day. I knew absolutely NOTHING about the inventing process, and I studied, learned and asked, and here I am — going to Ohio.
OK – I am also a little tiny bit excited to spend time ALONE in the car and crawl into my big hotel bed and blog, read, and watch TV with room service. It is the best of both worlds, I am running away for a secret love affair, but after meeting and exchanging the goods (prototype), I get to be luxuriously by myself. If you are a mom – you can appreciate this.
See you back soon – Rachel
