time out for tranquility

In just 10 short days, I will be married for 13 years.  Not sure where the time went, but 13 years later, my dear hubby and I are in a very different place now as opposed to when we first got hitched.  There are kids, dogs, a house, bills and bills, school events, basketball games, drum lessons, older grandparents, and careers.  Gone are the days of leisurely walks and late dinners.  Now are the days of dividing and conquering and pizza.

We did do something really special for our 10th anniversary, but since then we have not really marked the occasion.

Last year, we were scheduled to go on a quiet and relaxing spa weekend about 90 minutes away.  Unfortunately, my father-in-law passed away and we had to put that on hold.  Although a far cry from our usual weekend in Vegas or South Beach, a calm and hushed weekend to reconnect sounded like just what we needed a year ago.

One year later, the tranquility of a gorgeous spa in the middle of nowhere with a fireplace is making my mouth water.  YES, we are finally going on our spa weekend today after one year of trying to fit it in.  Of course, I must say thanks to my mom for taking good care of the boys while I am away.  My mom is in receipt of basketball bags and science fair experiments and 3rd grade biography speech notes and off we go.

Some see 13 as an unlucky number, but today it is proving lucky for me.  After just about 13 years of marriage, I get to enjoy 48 hours of leisurely walks, late dinners, a massage, and my hubby.  I a most looking forward to looming lazily over the Sunday Paper and coffee, just me and hubby with absolutely no interruptions.

It is not Aspen with Christian Grey, but I think that it will be perfect.

Will I think about business?  More than likely, yes.  Will I check the iPhone.  More than likely, a little.  Will I compete with March Madness?  More than likely, absolutely.

Will I stare into Henry’s eyes and enjoy conversation and reconnecting?

More than likely, a lot.

See you back on Monday.  Rachel

Our kids are pretty much the same ages as yours in the old picture..2 year old son and 5 month old daughter. I work from home and get to spend far more time than most dads do with the kids, but I know that, like you, I’ll wake up one day and they’ll be 10 and 12. Makes me remember to make the most of every moment with them, and although I stink at a lot of things, I think I do a pretty good job of the quality time aspect of parenting. Thanks for the unintentional reminder, Rachel. I’m going to hug both kids right now.
