Pittsburgh Business Woman gives shopping a make-over

I told you that there was a lot of new and fabulous women in my life lately.  Women worth admiring and checking out.  Women who took ideas and did something with them.  Well, recently, I was introduced over email to Leigh Levy, founder of Snuggle Bugs Consignment.  Leigh’s story is pretty fantastic and even if you don’t see yourself as a consignor of children’s ‘stuff,‘ read on because wait until you hear what Leigh is doing now…(Believe me, I try to be a wiser budget shopper, but it is not my strong suit.)

After leaving a corporate position in 2005 to be a stay-at-home mom, Leigh still wanted to contribute financially to her family (an extremely common emotion).  Leigh sold some of her children’s outgrown items through eBay and local consignment shops to bring in a little extra money and cut down on the clutter.  This is when Leigh quickly realized that the return she was getting from selling these items was not spectacular, and so she sought out a way to offer families a better solution with more value.  By tweaking the ‘traditional’ consignment model and offering seasonal events, Leigh found she was able to provide a fantastic payout to consignors (60% to 80% of their sales), while bringing a tremendous selection of gently used childrens items to local families.  Leigh first launched Snuggle Bugs at Castle Shannon Fire Hall in the fall of 2006 with just a handful (5o or so) consignors.

The event has grown over the last 6 years and has nearly 1000 consignors for each sale and fill over 83,000 square feet of retail space.  The consignors return season after season to get great deals on the things they need for their kids and a great payout for the things they were no longer using.

If you are not blown away yet by Leigh’s determination, her story goes on….Leigh recently launched Rock ItFashion so Hot you can Rock it again is the tagline, and I literally LOL’ed when I heard it.  Don’t you love it?

As you know, I am out of the baby consignment years, but when I heard about this idea of Leigh’s, I knew we were a match.  Lately, I find myself having a ton of stuff that I don’t know what to do with it.  It is like new, but I either don’t fit into it anymore or need something different.  Rather than deal with consignment stores, I end up giving it away!! With Leigh’s higher percentages, it may be worth my time to sell it!

Not to mention, I am intrigued by what I may find.  You see – I may have a budget-conscious side?

Snuggle Bugs Sale is coming up in Pittsburgh on September 15 and will be open until the 22nd in Pleasant hills, PA…. and for 2 lucky readers plus a guest each, I have prize tickets for the preview sale on Sept 13th from 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.  This is an invitation-only event where you get to preview and purchase merchandise first.

I heard about the children’s sale from a friend who said it’s awesome! Since I don’t have kids, I’m really looking forward to the RockIt sale in October!

I knew Leigh during her “corporate life” and would not be surprised by her success at anything she set out to do. Thanks Rachel for shining a spotlight on another amazing Pittsburgh mom.

Love the idea, especially since I am in and out of sizes every other week. The craziest thing in my closet? An 80’s dress that I just will not let go.
