If you have been stalking here for a while, you know that I took up distance running last year. At first, it was torturous, but I really needed to change-up my exercise so I stuck with it. Now, I am one of those annoying running addicts that hits the roads no matter what the weather may be…
I bet many of you had more exercise as one of your 2013 resolutions. How is that going for you?
To be honest, some days I find exercise easier to squeeze in than others. I am not going to blame the busy trap, we are all busy moms. I am just going to say this, forget one thing on your to-do list and exercise instead. Why? It is important. Last year, the ill-effects of not taking care of one’s body became evidenced to me. If you are close with me personally, you know that my mom did not take the best care of herself, and I don’t know why because she is totally worth it. I love my mom more than anything, but so does everyone else who meets her. She is kind and funny and sort of phenomenal, but I think she got pretty stuck in getting everything [silly] done just-so. Exercise, cooking good foods, and making both of these a priority did not make it onto her to-do list. After a second major back operation, my mom is making herself a priority and I could not be prouder. She is so worth it.
…And guess what? So are you. I am not a doctor, exercise instructor, nutritionist, or fitness expert but I do know many of them and they all say the same thing. This gist of this one thing is this – You only get one body, so take care of it. As women who now fill many shoes during the day, including pumps, boots, and clogs (mom shoes), we need to make sure that one of those sets of shoes are athletic shoes. Or, perhaps, bare feet on a yoga mat. Whatever your particular good poison is, do it. Do your exercise rather than make all the beds military tight. Run, kick box, or zumba instead of putting the clean dishes away – they will wait! Your body will not wait.
I used to be a neat freak. Unable to move forward with my day if my house was not just-so before going on with my day. Now, I don’t worry. If it is really getting to me, I shut the doors to all the rooms.
Before the holidays, my yoga instructor told me that someone commented to her that she is always happy…and was it for real? She told me: how could it not be? Watching people take care of themselves and lead them in practicing yoga was like living a dream. There is no mistaking why I love her because she sees the beauty in everyone and knows you are worth taking the time for yourself.

- Take a moment and look at your week’s schedule.
- Mark off the time spent doing mundane tasks around the house and then divide that time in half.
- Give yourself half that time to exercise during the week and see how much of the other stuff you can get done.
- What you don’t finish, either is not that important or maybe your kids can help you?
You are worth it.
