It’s that time of year again…the point in February when my social media feed is filled with endless complaining about the weather (guilty as charged), what everyone wants for Valentine’s Day (a donut, please), and this year, the Winter Olympics. While it is hard not to dream about an island getaway to escape the cold or a special V-day trip to somewhere tropical and chocolate filled, it is even more difficult to think about not having a home, a warm place to sleep, or a hot shower at the end of the day.
A few years ago, I became involved with Bethlehem Haven here in Pittsburgh, PA.
The Haven is a special place where they house 96 women any given night of the year among their residential programs: emergency shelter, transitional housing, and permanent supportive housing. For these individuals, [the Haven] helps them to address their “barriers to housing.” This may include physical and mental health care, job training, life skills training, and whatever else that individual might need for her journey. There are also programs that reach non-residents, including a day program drop-in shelter (open 10am to 6pm every day), health and wellness clinic, and Project Employ, a job training program. Among the programs, [The Haven] serves about 60,000 meals each year, houses several hundred women each year, and helps several thousand through their combined programs.
Over the years, I have continued to remain in touch with Bethlehem Haven, lending a helping hand whenever asked, which is why when my friend Becky Willis asked me to host a Thirty-One gifts virtual party, I had an even better idea. I told Becky I would, BUT I really, really, really hate ‘hucking’ people to buy stuff…so, we would have to add some social good. Becky explained Thirty-One Gifts remains active in giving back especially to women, so it was a win-win.
So, now to the good part. You can buy yourself a beach tote for your getaway, even if it is only in your dreams, a V-day gift and wrap it up real nice for yourself, or some funky home office organizational products (like me), and Becky will donate 50% of the profits to Bethlehem Haven.
There…that is my huck. Please help the Haven this winter. It has been an extremely awful season with severely low temps, ice, snow, and there doesn’t seem to be an end in site. So do something selfish for yourself and feel good in the process! R
Go here to order…would love to see what you get for YOU!
